The 'Boxing Day' tsunami of 26 December 2004 was the deadliest tsunami in recorded history. It impacted nearly the entirety of the Indian Ocean basin and was responsible for over 230,000 deaths.

This tragic event triggered an international mandate to bolster tsunami-risk mitigation, prevention and awareness, and propelled the Indian Ocean to the forefront of tsunami safety measures.

IOWave Exercises

Indian Ocean-wide Wave Exercises and drills are organised and held by the ICG/IOTWMS every two years. They provide an excellent opportunity for the ICG and its Member States to test their end-to-end Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), as well as promote community awareness and response.

Tsunami Service Providers

Tsunami Service Providers (TSPs) evaluate international tsunami risk and issue information thanks to a dedicated and redundant round-the-clock monitoring of seismic and sea level indicators.

Member States receive such info and are responsible for issuing internal warnings through their National Tsunami Warning Centres (NTWCs) or designated authorities based on their own analysis, on TSPs' advisory messages, or on a combination of all.
